- 1022) How come the Japanese can read/post news in Japanese?
-
- The reason why you can e-mail Japanese letters and articles is
- that kterm supports Shift-EUC code. The kterm input process would
- automatically convert 8 bit code into 7 bit code by inserting a zero
- bit every 7 bits. The result is a file size increase of one seventh.
- The kterm at the receiving end knows how to read Shift-EUC code.
-
- Again, the current design of cxterm does not provide such
- automatic shifting capability. So you need to hand convert the 8 bit
- representation to 7 bit representation by, say, uuencode.
-
- However, it is not entirely hopeless. If you use emacs, or cxemacs
- for cxterm, you probably can write some emacs lisp code to process the
- conversion. I have been thinking of doing that and I promise once I
- get it done I will share with everybody.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 1023) What software do I need in order to bring up a Chinese xterm environment?
-
- a) cxterm (Chinese xterm emulator) for displaying Chinese characters,
- b) celvis (Chinese vi clone) or cemacs (Chinese emacs) for editing
- Chinese text files,
- c) Chinese fonts, like cclib16fs(simplified), hku-ch16(traditional,
- d) Chinese input methods, like PinYin etc. This is sometimes called
- dictionary, dicts, etc and may already be in the cxterm files.
-
- Be sure to ftp files names README or how-to-make for instructions on
- how to build the softwares on your systems and what each file is.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 1024) Is there any TeX/LaTeX like Chinese document preparation system?
-
- We have ChTeX and Poor Man's Chinese. The latest version is Simpson's
- extension Poor Man's Chinese, which can deal with both GB and BIG-5.
- It can be used just like english TeX/LaTeX: processed by normal "tex"
- command (must be TeX3.1 or higher), previewed by normal "xdvi", print
- out by usual "dvips" (not dvi2ps).
-
- What you need is just to get those Chinese TeX/LaTeX fonts (tfm and
- pk) and two TeX marcos (pmCs.tex and pmCb.tex) and put them somewhere
- "tex" can find (define TEXINPUTS and TEXFONTS under unix). After that
- every thing is just like the normal TeX/LaTeX. Of course, you would
- have to use some chinese editor to edit those chinese (f.ex. cxterm).
- Simpson's extension have the best set of traditional Chinese
- characters I ever seen, and there is also possible for both GB and
- BIG-5 appear in the same document which no other current system can do
- it. It is also compatible with any other TeX/LaTeX command, so you can
- use them as usual. This give Simpson's extension Poor Man's Chinese a
- biggest advantage than other system---that means, "You can do it on
- Chinese if you can do it on English!!!"
-
- You can get the Chinese TeX/LaTeX fonts and marcos from ftp.math.psu.edu,
- [128.118.24.22] under pub/simpson/chinese/pmc by the usual ftp(1C).
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 1027) What is MULE?
-
- Mule is a modified version of GNU Emacs 18.58, it is
- distributed as a complete tar file or as a patch to 18.58.
- Mule can support a larger set of characters sets, such as
- Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Europeans.
-
- Mule can handle all these languages in the *same* buffer,
- meaning that you can mix text from different languages.
- (Neat if you are translating from one language to another.)
-
- Mule supports the following inputting methods:
- ENGLISH: Just type in. :-)
- JAPANESE: You have plenty of choises.
- EGG, EGG-SJ3, CANNA (these are bundled with Mule),
- SKK, boiled-egg (these are in 'contrib' directory).
- CHINESE, KOREAN, EUROPEAN:
- Please use 'quail' system bundled with Mule.
-
- New input methods should not be that hard to write. If you
- run Mule under a specilized terminal emulator (such as
- exterm or cxterm) which supports an input method you can use
- that.
-
- As for Chinese handling, please look into hz2gb.el in
- contrib/lisp.tar.Z. This allows quite convenient way to
- read and post articles of newsgroup alt.chinese.text for a
- GNUS user.
-
- As for fonts of European characters, Mr. Takahashi
- contributed 14dots and 24dots fonts for Latin1,2,3,4,5,
- Greek and Cyrillic. Those fonts are in fonts/ETL.tar.Z.
-
- Mule is available by anonymous ftp from:
-
- etlport.etl.go.jp [192.31.197.99]:/pub/mule
- sh.wide.ad.jp [133.4.11.11]:/JAPAN/mule
-
- If you are accessing from out of Japan, please use the
- latter site, which is faster. Either ftp the complete tar
- file, *or* if you have an unmodified GNU Emacs 18.58 you can
- ftp just the patch file diff-18.58-0.9.5 and apply that.
-
- You can join the MULE mailing list by sending a mail to
- Ken'ichi HANDA at "handa@etl.go.jp".

-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2000) GENERAL INFORMATION:
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2001) What is Global Volunteer Database(GVD)?
-
- GVD (Global Volunteer Database) is a compiled list of SCHK netters
- who are willing to provide information through e-mail for netters in other
- parts of the world.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2002) Why do we need GVD?
-
- Every now and then, we all need some kind of help from someone in
- another city or in another country; we need information on a degree
- program in another university thousands of miles away; we want to find
- our long lost classmate in another city or we simply need travel information
- in another state. We have all seen postings after postings of that
- nature in SCHK, wouldn't it be nice if we have known someone who are
- willing to provide us with information when we need it? This is what
- the GVD is all about.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2003) Who are GVD volunteer and what responsiblity do they have?
-
- GVD consists of SCHK netters from around the world who
- are willing to help other netters. The volunteer will
- answer questions for the school he/she attends or provides
- info for the city where he/she resides. It is a pure voluntary
- activity and the volunteer will not charge a fee for his/her
- service. GVD volunteers are those who are out there to help others.
-
- Please note, however, the information given by the volunteer will be
- made available to the public. In other words, every netter will have
- access to them. If any volunteer choses not to reveal certain information,
- please exclude it from the e-mail.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2004) Who can use GVD?
-
- Everyone who has access to this database can make use of the
- info in GVD. However, GVD cannot be sold for profit and the user
- cannot charge a fee for his/her service.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2005) What is the ultimate goal for GVD?
-
- Thousands of students leave Hong Kong every year to pursue
- advance degree in US, Canada, UK and Australia. The big majority
- of us do not know what to expect when we get on the plane.
- Our mission is to make available the GVD database to the Heng Seng
- Oversea Study Center (something like that) in HK, American Chamber of
- Commerce in HK, the Institute of International Education in Hong Kong and
- other organisations who assist students in HK to study aboard.
- Our volunteer in HK will physically go into the center and give
- the counselors a lesson on how to use AT&T e-mail from HK to
- contact our volunteers. GVD will also be available to the
- "Breakthru" Magazine of which they already have something similar
- for many years, only now it goes hi-tech thru Internet. :)
-
- The Hong Kong Student Association from every all univ.
- and college around the world SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE volunteer
- in the GVD. It will help Hong Kong Students around the world to
- communicate better in event that we have not foreseen. This will
- become an important step in moving SCHK from a discussion only forum to
- an organized global network for Hong Kong people. Something that
- we might rely on after 1997. :)
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2006) Who is in charge of the GVD?
-
- Kelvin Leung from Dartmoth College in New Hampshire, USA. You can
- reach him at "abs0@coos.dartmouth.edu". You are welcome to send him
- any complaints, compliments, flames, suggestions, changes of address...
- You can also reach him via regular mail. His current address is:
- Kelvin Leung, HB 2896, Dartmouth College, NH 03755, USA.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2007) How can I obtain a copy of the GVD?
-
- A copy of the lastest GVD will be available in the bi-monthly
- posting of SCHK FAQ. If you REALLY cannot wait, pleae contact Kelvin
- Leung at "abs0@coos.dartmouth.edu".
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2008) How can I become a volunteer?
-
- It is very easy. What you need to do is to fill in the form below
- and mail it to Kelvin Leung at "abs0@coos.dartmouth.edu" and you will
- become an official GVD volunteer.
-
- ------------ FORM BEGIN -------------
- Orgn: /* Organisation/School */
- Dept: /* Department of study */
- Name: /* Your name here */
- Addr: /* e-mail address */
- HKSA? /* Is there a Hong Kong Student Assocation in your school ? */

- ------------ FORM END -------------
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 2009) Can I take a look at the lastest GVD?

-
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3000) TOPICS: INTRODUCTION TO HKPA
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3001) What is HKPA and where is it?
-
- Welcome to Hong Kong Pictures Archive (HKPA), the first ever collection
- of Hong Kong related pictures on Internet. HKPA is located at
- /pub/hongkong/hkpa directory of ftp site: asia.lcs.mit.edu [18.52.0.62].
-
- There are already many ftp sites around the world which keep an archive
- (a collection/storage) of GIF images. However, images which related to
- HK are still kept privately these days. The generation of HKPA is to
- open a way to exhibit the HK culture around the world.
-
- People are free to obtain picture files from the site and are encouraged
- to contribute pictures which are related to Hong Kong.
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3002) WHAT is GIF files?
-
- GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It is a data representation
- of a graphics image in binary form. GIF files can be put on the background
- of your workstations or PC's or viewed in a separate window. It records up
- to 256 colors, and it offers a very good data compression without losing
- the picture quality when viewing.
-
- In order to view GIF picture files, one must have a picture viewer software
- which supports GIF format.
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3003) What picture format is being used in HKPA?
-
- As GIF is so popular which offers a very good reproduction quality and data
- compression, it is being used for storing pictures in HKPA.
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3004) Are there any picture formats other than GIF?
-
- There are lots of other picture formats apart from GIF. Just to name a few:
- BMP, TIF, TGA, JPG, PCX, and XPM. Their characteristics are mainly differed
- by the following:
-
- - Number of colours supported (GIF supports 256 (8-bit) colors)
- - Performance on data compression (some formats have no compression which
- always end up a very large picture file)
- - Performance when viewing (does the format require complex viewers that
- slow down the display process?)
- - The extent of software support (from merely viewers to image processors
- and desktop publishers)
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3005) What is the history of HKPA?
-
- At the very beginning (Nov 1991) the idea was only on the collection of
- HK popstar pictures, which was known as the HK Popstar GIF Collection
- Scheme (HKPGCS). Later on, an idea of HK scenic GIF collection came up.
- As there are quite a lot of potential on adding more picture categories
- in the future, we decided to re-structure the 2 collections into one big
- archive called HKPA.
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3006) What picture categories are available in HKPA?
-
- The structure of HKPA is as follows:
-
- HKPA ------- HKPA.MISC ----- HKmisc.index
- | |--- README.DONORS
- | |--- <other notices & readme files>
- | |--- <*.gif pictures available>
- |
- |--- HKPA.POPSTARS ----- HKstar.index
- | |-- README.DONORS
- | |-- GUESSING.GAME
- | |-- <other notices & readme files>
- | |-- <*.gif pictures available>
- | |-- guess --- <pictures of unknown popstars to
- | be figured out>
- |
- |--- HKPA.SCENIC ----- HKscenic.index
- | |-- README.DONORS
- | |-- <other notices & readme files>
- | |-- <*.gif pictures available>
- |
- |--- HKPA.<future category1>
- : ................
- |--- HKPA.<future categoryN>
-
- So there are 2 categories currently under HKPA:
-
- Hong Kong Pictures Archive - Popstar Collection (HKPA.POPSTARS)
